People and societies do not merely use various media; conversely, media follow their own logic, which brings about lasting changes in individual behavior and society as a whole. This power—particularly that of technological media—manifests itself in modern, liberal-capitalist societies in specific ways, such as to increase efficiency or to influence perceptions and behavior, and is currently undergoing transformation in the face of politically authoritarian tendencies. The seminar offers a broad overview of fundamental historical and contemporary positions in critical media theory, from A for Adorno to Z for Zuboff. The course is based on close and critical readings, presentations, and discussions of texts on social and media theory, supplemented at times by film screenings. The aim of the seminar is to explore the key aspects of critical media theory and to familiarize participants with critical-theoretical ways of thinking. Prerequisites for participation include a willingness to engage in intensive reading of theoretical texts, active and regular participation in class sessions, and the preparation of a text presentation. The seminar may be concluded with the submission of a term paper.
