Wars, climate collapse, human rights violations—where injustice occurs in an increasingly complex and crisis-ridden world, media witnessing can serve as a starting point for public education, historical reconciliation, and ethical responsibility. Whether witness videos on social media, holograms of contemporary witnesses in museums, tribunals in theaters, historical documentaries, or counter-forensic investigations—contemporary phenomena of witnessing between research, art, and activism raise new questions about the epistemic and aesthetic forms as well as the ethical and political potentials of witnessing. While media and cultural studies research has primarily focused on the singular figure of the witness in the context of traumatic historical events, this seminar examines the increasingly complex techniques, i.e., the knowledge formations, arrangements and processes, as well as the growing human-apparatus relationships of witnessing in contemporary media environments. 

The aim of this interdisciplinary seminar is to provide an overview of the current state of research on media witnessing, to facilitate intensive discussion of this complex issue, and to establish starting points for student research. Methodologically, the seminar combines intensive, critical engagement with theoretical and analytical texts with practical reflections and exercises in witnessing.
